The thing about HD is that its getting cheaper, just like DV cameras, so it will soon be affordable and ubiquitous. I also feel that DV (and HD) is best for documentaries because it gives a feeling of being there or an immediateness. With a narrative, the audience likes to feel somewhat removed, like they are a voyeur. Film or film look can give that experience or even just shooting video in black and white (or even in pixelvision). I think that David Lynch didn't spend a whole lot on Inland Empire. He might have gone digital because no one would give him a lot of money to make his stinking script. He has not gotten any North American backing since Twin Peaks. He has some French investors funding him. That's the last I heard. The best creativity can come out of a low budget because you are forcing the creative juices out to figure out how to get what you want with what little you have.
