Pollan is someone I have been paying attention too for a while, and I have yet to read his book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma (anybody lend me a copy?), but whenever book excerpts and articles arise with his name, I'm right there.

On January 25, 2008, the Pima County Republican Women's Club invited to speak at their luncheon the Sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio. Sheriff Joe is the self-described "toughest sheriff in the nation" and is widely known for his controversial enforcement strategies that have cost Maricopa County over 41 million dollars in lawsuits for civil rights violations, as well as his hard line against undocumented migrants.

This video depicts that morning when Tucson activists came out to let Arpaio and the Women's Club know that he was not welcome in Tucson, and neither are his policies.

This section is about the corruption of police and other officials, at all levels of government and both sides of the border. The next section, available next week, concerns drug trafficking and the drug war.

"Passage" is a study of the contrasts between the inequalities of urban human life, and the raw purity of the natural world. It reflects my fascination with both -- and ultimately, seeks out those places where they intersect.

Shot in Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil in 2004 and 2005.

Musical improvisation by Nick Luca at Synaesthesia 2007.

Produced and edited by Sonya Angelica Diehn.

The final cut will premiere at the Synaesthesia DVD release show Friday, Feb. 1 beginning 9 PM at El Ojito, 340 N. 4th Ave. (see prior post)
